Clematis 'Caerulea Luxurians' was raised in 1985 by breeder Werner Stastny in Sweden from a cross of 'Alba Luxurians' with 'Neodynamia'. It has largely shed the green of its mother's flowers: the roughly 6 cm blooms are white with a violet tinge, veined in fine blue towards the margin. Usually four to five tepals surround the purple-red anthers. In cool weather the bluish blush deepens.
From July to September 'Caerulea Luxurians' flowers persistently and abundantly, as is typical of the Viticella Group. At about 300 cm it conquers trellises, obelisks, fences and pergolas, yet can just as well be trained through shrubs and roses. It thrives in any aspect, making it a flexible choice for gardens of all kinds.
'Caerulea Luxurians' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). As a pruning group 3 variety, cut it back to about 25 cm in March; it then shoots strongly and flowers on the new growth. Please note: the same variety has also been officially registered as 'Luxuriant Blue' since 2007.
