Clematis 'Purple Dream' was bred by Polish nurseryman Szczepan Marczyński and launched in 2012 alongside its sister variety 'Pink Dream' as a novelty in the Atragene group. Its fully double, bell-shaped flowers hang nodding from the stems, 10-12 cm wide, cream-purple outside with finely twisted sepals, pale pink inside, with a pleasant grapefruit scent that develops best in a sunny spot.
The main flush appears in May, followed by a second, less abundant flush in summer between July and August. At 200-300 cm, 'Purple Dream' suits trellises, pergolas and pots against house walls; as an early-flowering clematis it tolerates sun to part shade in a sheltered position.
'Purple Dream' is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and belongs to pruning group 1: pruning is not strictly necessary, though in our own stock cutting back to about 100 cm in June has proven useful to keep the plant compact and encourage the second flush.
