Clematis heracleifolia 'New Love' was bred by Dutch nurseryman Jan Fopma and registered in 2003; a herbarium specimen of the variety already dates from 29 September 1996. Its fragrant, hyacinth-shaped flowers appear in dense clusters in deep violet-blue and reach about 3 cm across.
As a herbaceous, sub-shrubby clematis with an upright habit, 'New Love' flowers abundantly from July to September. At 60 to 80 cm tall, it is excellent for borders, edging and container growing; a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained soil brings out its flowering best.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -29 °C). As 'New Love' belongs to pruning group 3, hard pruning back to about 25 cm in March is recommended; this promotes bushy growth and a rich summer bloom.
