Clematis montana 'Hidcote' is thought to have originated at Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire, England, and was introduced before 1990. Botanically it is a cross between Clematis chrysocoma and Clematis montana var. rubens, which is why the variety is also listed as Clematis x vedrariensis 'Hidcote'. From May to June it produces deep pink flowers, 6 to 8 cm across, with four sepals and striking yellow stamens.
Reaching a height of around 450 cm, 'Hidcote' is, like other montana varieties, well suited to trellises, pergolas and house walls, up which it climbs vigorously and quickly. It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded position with a cool, shaded root run, allowing it to cover larger areas or disguise unsightly fences and sheds.
'Hidcote' is reliably hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C) and belongs to pruning group 1: hard pruning is not required, though a trim to about 100 cm in June helps keep its vigour and flowering in check. Like many montana hybrids, it rewards this care with dense growth and reliable flowering the following year.
