Clematis montana 'Sanssouci' was raised in 2004 by the German breeder Willem Straver and introduced under its name in 2012. It recalls Frederick the Great's palace in Potsdam; in French the name means "carefree". Its 4–6 cm flowers are pink and lightly scented, with white filaments and cream anthers. It is considered more floriferous than the similar 'Tetrarose'.
'Sanssouci' flowers from May to June. At around 400 cm it is one of the vigorous climbers of the montana group and finds its place on larger supports, pergolas, fences and house walls. Allow enough space so that it can develop freely.
'Sanssouci' is winter-hardy (zone 7, -17.7 to -12.3 °C). As a pruning group 1 Clematis montana it is cut right after flowering: cut the plant back to about 200 cm in June, which keeps it in shape and encourages new shoots for the following year.
