Clematis montana 'Superba' was raised around 1914 by the English nursery George Jackman & Son from a cross of Clematis montana var. rubens and 'Mrs. George Jackman'. At 6-8 cm across, its four widely opened, creamy-white sepals are among the larger blooms of the Montana group; around the greenish pistil with its clearly visible stamens they release a distinctly perceptible fragrance — a charming contrast to the dark green foliage.
From May to June, 'Superba' shows off its abundance of flowers. At around 450 cm tall — up to 600 cm under good conditions — it climbs medium-sized trees or correspondingly sturdy supports, pergolas and trellises. It thrives in sun to partial shade and prefers a sheltered spot with a south-west or east-facing aspect and moist, well-drained soil.
'Superba' is hardy to zone 7 (about -17.7 to -12.3 °C) and needs very little care — good drainage matters most. Since it flowers on the previous year's wood, regular pruning is not necessary; if needed, cut it back to about 100 cm in June.
