The Clematis montana 'New Dawn' belongs to the montana clematis and adorns itself in early summer with fragrant pink flowers 4 to 6 cm across. The flat, saucer-shaped blooms consist of four petals with paler edges and carry yellow stamens; they stand out beautifully against the dark green foliage.
From May to June 'New Dawn' covers itself in blossom. At around 500 cm tall and with vigorous, fast growth, it is ideal for greening fences, pergolas, house walls and tall supports. It thrives in sun as well as partial shade, copes with any aspect and prefers moist, well-drained soil.
'New Dawn' is winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C) and flowers on the previous year's wood. To keep growth vigorous and flowering generous, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Plant it with the crown 5 to 8 cm below the soil surface so that new shoots form underground. Wear gloves when pruning, as the sap can irritate the skin.
