Clematis 'Madame Le Coultre' traces back to the French breeder Auguste Boisselot, who raised it around 1885 from a seedling of 'The President'. Its 13–15 cm fragrant flowers open pure white with eight slightly wavy, overlapping sepals and golden-yellow stamens – a classic among the white-flowered clematis, cultivated in gardens for well over a century.
'Madame Le Coultre' flowers freely and reliably from June into August. At around 300 cm it is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports, and also grows well in containers. It thrives in sun to part shade, though the roots are best kept cool and shaded.
'Madame Le Coultre' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C), making it dependable even in harsher locations. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut it back to about 100 cm in June. Once established, it is one of the toughest and easiest-care large-flowered varieties.
