Clematis koreana 'Brunette' was raised in 1979 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from a cross of Clematis koreana var. lutea and Clematis fauriei. Its 6–7 cm, bell-shaped flowers hang nodding and give off a pleasant scent; the four glossy, dark purple sepals frame pale green stamens. The cultivar was later officially renamed 'Catullus', but the original name 'Brunette' is still the one used in the trade.
At around 200 cm, 'Brunette' suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well and also thrives in containers. It flowers from April to August and prefers a sunny to semi-shaded position with cool, free-draining, moisture-retentive soil – the scent is strongest in full sun. Plant the crown 5–8 cm deep so the plant can also send up new shoots from below ground.
'Brunette' is very winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 °C). Cut it back to about 100 cm in May to encourage vigorous growth. Give it two to five years to establish – only then does it show its full flowering power.
