Clematis alpina 'Pamela Jackman' was raised in England in 1960 by breeder Rowland Jackman of George Jackman & Son — named after his daughter Pamela, for whom an earlier (now lost) cultivar had already been named. Its bell-shaped, nodding flowers consist of four deep-blue sepals with a creamy-white to pale-yellow centre and reach 5–6 cm; the narrow, pointed buds open into an elegant play of blue and cream.
As one of the very first clematis to flower, 'Pamela Jackman' ushers in the garden season as early as April. At around 300 cm, it suits trellises, fences, obelisks and small trees or shrubs, and also thrives in containers (at least 45 cm in diameter). It's remarkably easy-going about position: full sun or partial shade, almost any aspect — only the roots should stay cool and shaded.
'Pamela Jackman' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and received the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2005. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Give it moist, well-drained soil, and it will reward you with reliable blooms year after year.
