Clematis alpina is the botanical species of the alpine clematis, native to the Alps and other mountain ranges of Central and Southern Europe. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers are blue, measure 5-6 cm and show four pointed sepals around a tuft of pale staminodes – modified stamens – with white filaments. After flowering, silky seedheads follow and stay on the plant for months.
From April to May, Clematis alpina flowers profusely on the previous year's wood. Growing up to 300 cm tall, it climbs trellises, fences, pergolas and shrubs; if allowed to grow without support, it also spreads as ground cover. It feels most at home in shade to partial shade in a cool, airy spot and does not need full sun. Thanks to its fine root system, it also thrives in a container.
Clematis alpina is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and considered robust and undemanding. It likes moist, free-draining, neutral to slightly alkaline soil without waterlogging. Cut your Clematis alpina back to about 100 cm in June; beyond that it needs no regular pruning, because hard pruning in spring removes the year's flowers.
