Clematis alpina 'Ruby' traces back to a seedling of Clematis alpina selected in 1937 by the English breeder Ernest Markham and only introduced in 1952. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers consist of four pointed, reddish-violet sepals around an inner ring of greenish-white to cream staminodes, and reach a size of 5-6 cm.
'Ruby' produces its main flush from April to May; at up to 350 cm it suits trellises, fences, pergolas and small trees or shrubs. It copes well in sun to partial shade in almost any aspect, as long as the soil stays free-draining and not too wet.
'Ruby' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and, like most alpina cultivars, robust and largely disease-resistant. Cut your Clematis 'Ruby' back to about 100 cm in June to keep it compact and encourage abundant flowering the following year; once established, it needs very little care overall.
