Clematis 'Georg' was selected in 1985 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson, a seedling of Clematis macropetala. It is named after Georg Wettergren, who worked alongside Johnson for six decades. The 6–7 cm nodding flowers show the typical double form of macropetala hybrids: four lance-shaped, deep violet-purple sepals with a silvery edge surround a dense ring of staminodes and yellow-anthered stamens.
'Georg' flowers from April to May and reaches a height of around 250 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, pergolas, obelisks and large containers, and it will also happily scramble through smaller shrubs. As an Atragene hybrid it thrives in almost any aspect – even in cooler, shadier spots it flowers reliably.
This variety is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C) and copes with harsh winters without protection. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut 'Georg' back to about 100 cm in June. Once established, the plant proves easy to care for and appreciates well-drained, evenly moist soil.
