Clematis 'Jouiniana Praecox' is a selected seedling of Clematis × jouiniana, described and named around 1959. Its cultivar name 'Praecox' – Latin for 'early ripening' – indicates that it flowers considerably earlier than its parent. Every year new stems up to 400 cm long emerge, adorned for weeks with small, star-shaped flowers: four reflexed, pale milky-blue sepals on white stamens open into a star 4 cm across – with a subtle, pleasant fragrance.
Flowering begins in July and continues through October, offering a long display for garden and terrace alike. As 'Jouiniana Praecox' scrambles rather than climbs, it excels as ground cover: effortlessly covering several square metres, suppressing weeds and shading the soil. It also scrambles over shrubs, along fences or up obelisks – an ideal companion for lavender, heathers or conifers. Positions from full sun to semi-shade suit it equally; it even grows reliably in dry, north-facing spots.
With hardiness to Zone 5 (−28.8 to −23.4 °C), 'Jouiniana Praecox' easily survives Central European winters. In March, cut the stems back to approximately 25 cm to encourage vigorous, even regrowth. Shortening the long stems in winter already lightens the spring workload. Two prestigious awards confirm its outstanding garden value: the RHS Award of Garden Merit (1995) and a commendation from the Chicago Botanic Garden (1997), where 'Praecox' was rated the best of more than 60 clematis varieties after a multi-year trial.

Jouiniana Praecox is simply unbeatable as a ground cover in partial shade. She easily covers 2-3 sq m and grows here on our rather dry north side. Her wealth of leaves and flowers thus conceals the area between the house wall and the bed, which hardly gets any moisture because of the roof overhang. We have of course planted the clematis itself in the area that gets a little rain and guide the shoots accordingly. In addition, an ugly drain shaft can be covered at the same time. The small, steel-blue flowers in August-September last a long time and, as a contrast to the dark foliage, are an eye-catcher once more.Automatically translated · Show original
