Clematis 'Imke' was selected in 2007 by Imke Bunk of Elmshorn in Holstein as a seedling of Clematis alpina, named after her and introduced in 2009 by Baumschule Münster; the other parent is unknown. Its double, open bell-shaped flowers nod from the stems and measure 5–8 cm. The four sepals and the numerous petal-like staminodes are cherry red with a bluish flush.
The main flowering of 'Imke' falls in April and May, followed by a second flush in June. At 200–300 cm tall, the variety needs a support such as a trellis, a fence or an obelisk.
'Imke' is very hardy (zone 4, -34.4 to -28.9 °C). As the flowers are borne on old wood, cut your Clematis Imke back to about 100 cm in June after flowering.
