Clematis tangutica 'Aureolin' was raised in 1979 at the Boskoop Research Station in the Netherlands, a cross of Clematis tangutica and a hybrid of the same species. Its golden-yellow, bell-shaped, nodding flowers reach a diameter of 5 to 6 cm and sit on long, slightly downy stalks.
'Aureolin' flowers from July to September and reaches a height of about 400 cm. After flowering, decorative, silky, fluffy seed heads form, adorning the garden well into autumn and winter. The variety suits trellises, obelisks and larger climbing frames in sunny to partially shaded spots with well-drained soil.
'Aureolin' is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and copes well even in colder locations. For vigorous new growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March.
