Clematis 'Anita' was raised in 1988 by Dutch breeder Rinus Zwijnenburg from a cross between Clematis potaninii var. fargesii and Clematis tangutica, and belongs to the Tangutica Group. While most cultivars in this group produce warm yellow or orange flowers, 'Anita' offers a striking contrast: creamy, gently nodding buds open to reveal pure white, 4–5 cm flowers with 4 to 6 sepals and a prominent tuft of golden-yellow stamens. The interplay of white and gold gives the plant a quiet elegance that is especially effective when combined with yellow-flowered clematis such as 'Golden Tiara' or 'Aureolin'.
From June to August, 'Anita' carries its delicate flowers in abundance, bringing a fresh, airy quality to medium and larger gardens. Growing to about 300 cm, it is well suited to trellises, pergolas, fences and obelisks — or left to weave through shrubs and trees as a natural curtain. It prefers sunny to partially shaded positions and tolerates drier conditions well, provided the soil is not waterlogged.
'Anita' is outstandingly frost-hardy, surviving temperatures down to −28.8 °C (Zone 5) without difficulty — a reliable performer even in harsher climates. As a Group 3 clematis, cut it back hard to about 25 cm in March; this stimulates fresh growth and encourages prolific flowering. Beyond that, 'Anita' asks for very little: it tolerates drought and is straightforward to look after — an excellent choice for beginners.

Since the younger of my sisters is called Anita, my dad couldn’t resist planting this clematis on our property in spring 2008.
When I came back from holiday at the beginning of September, I was a bit puzzled about what on earth was blooming on the greenhouse again, right next to the chimney, where an R. Banksia Lutea planted in the greenhouse is supposed to take up the space.
With a broad grin I was told that the clematis planted behind the greenhouse in spring had found its way up here :)Automatically translated · Show original
