Clematis 'Tibetan Mix' resulted from a deliberate cross between Clematis tibetana subsp. vernayi var. laciniifolia and Clematis ladakhiana made by Dutch botanist Wim Snoeijer; it arose in the collection of John Fopma and was introduced in 1997 by the Jan van Zoest nursery. Its roughly 5 cm bell-shaped flowers are yellow with purple speckles – more subdued on the outside, brighter and more densely speckled inside – with deep purple stamens set against striking grey foliage.
'Tibetan Mix' grows vigorously to about 300 cm, making it well suited to trellises, obelisks or pergolas, where it flowers in September, when many other climbers have already finished for the season. It thrives in sun or partial shade and can also be used to cover taller fences, walls or small trees.
'Tibetan Mix' is hardy to zone 5, or around -28.8 °C. In March, cut it back hard to about 25 cm so it produces vigorous new growth and flowers reliably the same year.
