Clematis alpina 'Rosy Pagoda' was raised in 1974 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson as a seedling of Clematis alpina 'Ruby'. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers appear in soft pink, slightly darker at the tips and base, surrounding an inner whitish-green 'skirt' of staminodes. At 5–6 cm across, they rank among the medium-sized flowers of the Atragene Group.
The main flush runs from April to May, with 'Rosy Pagoda' occasionally producing a light rebloom in summer on new growth. At around 300 cm tall, it suits trellises, arbours and obelisks and can be planted facing any direction. Because it flowers on last year's wood, it usually reaches its full flowering potential only after one to two established years.
'Rosy Pagoda' is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and easy to care for. For compact growth, cut the plant back to 100 cm in June; keep the root area cool and shaded, for example with low companion planting or a layer of mulch.
