Clematis macropetala is the wild species behind the large-flowered clematis and originates from China; numerous other varieties of the Alpina and Atragene group descend from it directly or indirectly. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers are semi-double and blue, measure 5-8 cm and show four lance-shaped tepals around a dense ring of smaller, blue to cream-white staminodes – modified stamens.
From April to May, Clematis macropetala flowers profusely, somewhat later than related wild species of the Atragene group; in return, it tolerates sunnier positions better. Growing up to 300 cm tall, it climbs vigorously on trellis, obelisk, fence or pergola and, thanks to its compact root ball, is also well suited to containers on balcony or terrace.
Clematis macropetala is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and generally considered low-maintenance, as it belongs to pruning group 1 and flowers on the previous year's wood. Cut your Clematis macropetala back to about 100 cm in June to keep it compact; a harder cut back in spring would remove that year's flowers.
