Clematis macropetala 'Big Bird' bears double, vivid blue flowers 7 to 8 centimetres across, appearing nodding and bell-shaped above the foliage.
'Big Bird' flowers in April on the previous year's wood and reaches a height of around 300 centimetres. Belonging to the robust Atragene group, it thrives in any aspect, making it suitable for shadier spots as well as trellises, obelisks or trellised walls and fences in gardens both large and small.
With hardiness zone 5 (down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C), 'Big Bird' is reliably hardy. Since flowers form on old wood, pruning should take place after flowering: we recommend cutting the plant back to around 100 centimetres in June to encourage compact, richly flowering growth.
