Clematis 'Firefly' was raised in 1987 by English breeder Ken Pyne as a seedling of 'Ernest Markham', first flowered in 1989 and was introduced in 1995. Its 10–15 cm flowers are a deep purple with a vivid red central bar that fades to pink towards the base of the tepals, set off by prominent stamens with white filaments and red anthers.
At around 300 cm, 'Firefly' climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks and other supports, and also suits larger containers. The main flush appears in May and June, with a further flowering in July.
'Firefly' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June to encourage vigorous growth and a good second flush.
