Clematis 'Nuit de Chine' has been in cultivation since before 1995. Its 10–14 cm flowers glow in rich violet, with a darker purple bar on each petal that adds extra depth.
'Nuit de Chine' flowers twice: from May to June and again from July to August. At around 200 cm it suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well, and also cuts a fine figure in a container. Conveniently, it thrives facing any direction, including shadier north- or east-facing spots.
'Nuit de Chine' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and copes well even with harsher winters. For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June – a light prune is all this variety needs.
