Clematis 'Jackmanii Alba' was bred in 1877 by the English nurseryman Charles Noble from a cross between 'Jackmanii' and Fortunei, making it one of the older, proven varieties from the Victorian heyday of English clematis breeding. The flowers open creamy white with a delicate silvery-blue sheen and vary in form depending on the flush: the first flowers on old wood are semi-double to double, while the second flush on new growth produces single blooms.
'Jackmanii Alba' flowers first in June, followed by a second flush from July to August. Reaching up to 400 cm, this vigorous climber is ideal for trellises, arbours, pergolas and fences in medium to large gardens. It thrives best in a sunny to semi-shaded position with a cool, shaded root run.
The variety is hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C) and reliably survives Central European winters. Cut 'Jackmanii Alba' back to about 100 cm in June; after that, only light pruning is needed to preserve the framework of wood that carries the double first flush.
