Clematis 'Prince Philip' was bred by American breeder A. H. Steffen before 1977 from a cross of Clematis viticella 'Atrorubens' and Clematis lanuginosa; in the 1980s British breeder Raymond Evison brought the variety back from the USA to Britain. Its large flowers, 15 to 20 cm across, appear in rich violet with striking purple stripes and slightly wavy petals that twist as they age; pale stamens add a delicate accent at the centre of the bloom.
Growing to around 300 cm, 'Prince Philip' is ideal for trellises, trellis panels and obelisks, as well as for covering pergolas and fences in medium to large gardens. It flowers from July to September, providing a colourful highlight in the summer garden; a sunny to partially shaded position with a cool, shaded root run suits it particularly well.
'Prince Philip' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and copes well with harsh winters outdoors. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March; once established, it rewards this care with lush flowering for many years.
