Clematis texensis 'Prince William' was introduced in 2017 by Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer and combines, unusually for a texensis hybrid, pink with violet. The trumpet-shaped flowers, 4-6 cm wide and 4-5 cm deep, open first tulip-shaped and widen only a little over time: white with pink on the inside, dark purple with a pink margin on the outside, set off by cream stamens.
'Prince William' flowers from June to September and, at around 300 cm, stays comparatively compact for a texensis variety. It suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well, as well as pots, and thrives in sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spots with well-drained, moisture-retentive soil.
'Prince William' is hardy in zone 7 (-17.7 to -12.3 °C). As a pruning group 3 variety it flowers on new wood: cut the plant back to about 25 cm every March to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
