Clematis 'Ivan Olsson' was raised in 1955 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson as a seedling of 'The President' and named after Mr Olsson, a clematis enthusiast from Gothenburg who gave him the seed. Its 8–14 cm flowers appear white with a violet tinge, with slightly waved sepals and purple stamens.
It flowers from June to August. At around 250 cm, 'Ivan Olsson' climbs vigorously over trellises, obelisks and other supports on walls or fences, and also does well in larger containers. It thrives in sunny to semi-shaded spots, preferring a position sheltered from wind.
'Ivan Olsson' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the shoots back to about 50 cm in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering.
