Clematis 'Blue Stream' traces back to the Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson, who raised the plant as early as 1952 and initially sold it only in small quantities as Clematis fauriei. Only around 1995 did it receive its own cultivar name 'Blue Stream', reaching the wider trade under this name from 1999 – it is also listed as Clematis macropetala 'Blue Stream'. Its flowers measure 5-7 cm, are double and glow violet, with four tepals and 4 to 12 narrow, spatula-shaped staminodes in between.
'Blue Stream' flowers from April to May on the previous year's wood. At around 250 cm tall, it suits trellises, climbing frames and fences well, and can also be grown in a sufficiently large container.
'Blue Stream' is very hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June – this encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering the following year.
