Clematis 'Daan' was raised by the Dutch breeder Pieter Zwijnenburg and belongs to the Atragene Group, the alpine clematis. Its flowers, about 7 cm across, are broadly bell-shaped and hang nodding from the stem; the four narrow sepals appear in dark purple, and the ivory-white staminodes are distinctly shorter than the sepals.
'Daan' flowers from April to May and is one of the spring bloomers in the garden. At around 300 cm it suits trellises, screens and pergolas, where the nodding bells show to good effect.
'Daan' is very hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. The variety is supplied in a 2-litre pot with strong shoots.
