Clematis 'Kaaru' was bred in 1984 by the Estonian nurseryman Uno Kivistik as an open-pollinated seedling of 'Hagley Hybrid'. Like several sister cultivars from the same breeding line, it takes its name from a line of an old Estonian nursery rhyme. Its large, star-shaped flowers appear in a rich purple-violet and reach 10 to 12 cm across, with striking anthers at the centre.
'Kaaru' flowers from July to September on the current year's growth and reaches a height of around 300 cm. This makes it well suited to tall trellises, climbing frames and obelisks, where it can develop fully. Give it a sunny to lightly sheltered spot.
'Kaaru' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut the shoots back hard to about 50 cm in March – since the flowers form on the current year's wood, this hard prune encourages abundant flowering through summer and autumn.

This clematis is simply incredible! I planted it last autumn as a companion for my climbing rose "Rosanna" and it has now been flowering profusely for 3 months already, with no end in sight. It gets about 5 hours of full sun a day and stands somewhat sheltered from the wind.Automatically translated · Show original
