The clematis 'Mon Amour' was selected in 2004 by Dutch breeders Wim Snoeijer and Jan van Zoest (J. van Zoest bv) from an open-pollinated cross and introduced under its current name in 2011; in trade you will occasionally also find it as 'Amazing Toronto'. Its star-shaped flowers, 6–10 cm across, glow in rich dark violet, with each petal carrying a purple central stripe and violet stamens.
With a growth height of around 200 cm, 'Mon Amour' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and trellis panels, even in smaller spaces, and it also thrives in containers. From June to September it produces a steady succession of new flowers, making it ideal for a long-flowering spot on a house wall, pergola or terrace. It grows well in full sun as well as partial shade – including east-, south- or west-facing positions – and appreciates a sheltered site with a cool, shaded root run.
'Mon Amour' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots. Give it two to five years to reach its full flowering potential.
