Clematis 'Diana' was bred in 1985 by Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik from a cross of 'Valge Daam' and 'Daniel Deronda', and introduced in 1990. Its 10-15 cm flowers are pale blue with a delicate whitish, blue-veined central bar across six elongated, rhombic, slightly wavy tepals with recurved tips, set off by golden yellow anthers on greenish filaments. The variety is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt.
Growing to around 200 cm, 'Diana' flowers from June to September and is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports, as well as cultivation in a large container.
'Diana' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 3: cut the plant back hard to about 50 cm in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering.
