Clematis macropetala 'Snowbird' was raised in 1969 by British breeder Barry Fretwell. Its nodding, very double flowers are pure white, measure 5-6 cm and show slightly curled petals. After flowering the variety forms decorative, fluffy seed heads that extend its ornamental value into summer.
'Snowbird' flowers from April to May and reaches a height of around 250 cm. It suits trellises, wall supports and obelisks, and also a large container. It does best in full sun to partial shade in a sheltered position, in moist, well-drained soil – ideally keep the root area and base of the plant cool and shaded.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C). For care, cut 'Snowbird' back to about 100 cm in June. The plant is supplied in a pot with strong shoots and establishes reliably in a suitable spot.
