Clematis 'Vivienne Lawson', raised by English breeders Vince and Sylvia Denny, was named in 1988 after one of their customers. Its large flowers glow in deep purple-violet with six to eight pointed sepals and bright golden stamens – at 12 to 15 cm across, a real eye-catcher.
At around 300 cm, 'Vivienne Lawson' climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks or pergolas, and also suits larger trellis structures against house walls. It flowers continuously from July to September. It's happy in a sunny to semi-shaded spot, but keep the root zone and base of the plant cool and shaded.
'Vivienne Lawson' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). In March, cut the plant back hard to about 50 cm – this encourages fresh growth the same year and reliable flowering on the new shoots. After planting, give it some time to establish; setting the root ball a little deeper encourages vigorous new shoots from below.
