The Clematis 'Nikolaj Rubtzov' was bred in 1967 by M. A. Beskaravainaja and A. N. Volosenko-Valenis at the Nikitsky Botanic Garden in Crimea, from a cross of 'Jackmanii' and 'Nelly Moser', and named after the Soviet botanist Professor N. I. Rubtsov. The 8 to 14 cm flowers appear in rich violet with lighter bars on each petal, complemented by golden-yellow stamens.
From June to September, 'Nikolaj Rubtzov' flowers profusely and reaches a height of around 300 cm. This makes the variety an excellent choice for trellises, obelisks, pergolas and larger arbours, up which it climbs vigorously. It thrives in almost any position and can be planted generously even in larger gardens.
'Nikolaj Rubtzov' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C) and needs no special winter protection in our climate. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to around 50 cm in March.
