Clematis 'Lawsoniana' is a historic hybrid raised by the Scottish breeder Isaac Anderson-Henry from a cross of Clematis lanuginosa with 'Fortunei'; it was introduced in 1870. Its 15–20 cm flowers are violet-blue, with six to eight overlapping sepals, darker veins and beige stamens; young flowers carry a pink flush at first.
At around 300 cm, 'Lawsoniana' climbs vigorously up trellises and supports and flowers from June to July. It thrives in full sun as well as in partial shade and tolerates any aspect, as long as the soil is moist and well drained.
'Lawsoniana' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots. Plant it so that the crown sits 5–8 cm below the soil surface.

I can recommend C. Lawsoniana to any garden lover. Last year she gave me great pleasure with huge flowers and a flowering period lasting into October. In addition, the flowers and the seed heads can be used as decoration in a vase.Automatically translated · Show original
