Clematis 'Lemon Chiffon' was bred by the British hybridiser Ed Phillips from 'Horn of Plenty' and 'Moonlight', and introduced in 1993 by Busheyfields Nursery. Its flowers open creamy in colour, reach 15 to 18 cm across and carry six to eight slightly wavy petals with striking yellow stamens.
Growing to around 200 cm, 'Lemon Chiffon' flowers from June to August, making it well suited to trellises, obelisks and containers on the patio or balcony. While the stems enjoy a sunny to partly shaded position, the roots prefer to stay cool and shaded, for example beneath low companion plants or a layer of mulch.
This variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 to -17.8 °C). Cut it back to around 50 cm in March — it rewards this with vigorous new growth and abundant flowering through the summer.
