Clematis 'Królowa Bona' was raised by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński from the cross '36-113-04' × 'Jerzy Popieluszko' – selected in 2013, named in 2021 and introduced in 2022. Its 9–12 cm flowers are violet-purple with a purple-red central bar that pales as the flower ages; creamy filaments with pale yellow anthers add a delicate contrast. The first flowers of the season are often semi-double to double, with 6 to 8 sepals and up to 40 additional staminodes, while later blooms appear single.
'Królowa Bona' flowers profusely from June to August and reaches a height of 150 to 200 cm – compact enough for trellises, obelisks and other supports, yet equally at home in a container on a balcony or terrace. It prefers a sunny spot in rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic reaction.
This cultivar is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and reliably survives harsh winters. As 'Królowa Bona' belongs to the lightly pruned group 2, cut it back only lightly to about 100 cm in June – this preserves the decorative early flowers the following year, and the plant rewards you with an especially rich display.
