The clematis 'Sir Garnet Wolseley' was introduced as early as 1874 by the English nursery G. Jackman & Son, making it one of the most traditional varieties among the large-flowered hybrids. Its flowers appear in violet tones with purple stripes, reach 10 to 12 cm across and display the slightly ovate tepals typical of the group, with purple-red stamens on white filaments. A delicate, violet-like scent adds further appeal to the blooms.
With a height of around 300 cm, 'Sir Garnet Wolseley' is excellently suited to trellises, obelisks and climbing frames on house walls, where it finds ample room to climb. The variety flowers twice: a first flush appears between May and June, a second from July to August. It tolerates almost any aspect, making it a reliable choice for shadier spots as well.
'Sir Garnet Wolseley' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23°C) and copes well with harsh winters outdoors. In June, after the first flush, it is cut back to about 75 cm – this encourages vigorous new growth and ensures a rich second flowering in late summer. As a variety proven for well over 140 years, it also proves robust and easy to care for in the garden.
