Clematis 'Lady Betty Balfour' was raised around 1910 by the English nursery George Jackman & Son from the cross 'Gipsy Queen' × 'Beauty of Worcester'. Its 12–15 cm flowers are a deep purple-violet with a hint of red that turns bluer with age. The sepals overlap and have a wavy margin, and yellow stamens provide a bright contrast.
From July to September the flowers open on the current year's growth. At around 300 cm, 'Lady Betty Balfour' climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks, fences and other supports. It thrives best in a sunny, sheltered position, such as a south- or west-facing wall, in moist, well-drained soil.
'Lady Betty Balfour' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March; it belongs to pruning group 3 and then shoots freshly.
