Clematis 'Lasurstern' was bred in 1905 by the German nursery Goos & Koenemann and remains one of the most traditional large-flowered hybrids. Its large to very large flowers appear in a rich violet-blue with six to eight wavy-edged, overlapping petals and bright yellow stamens that create a striking contrast. With a diameter of 15 to 20 cm, 'Lasurstern' ranks among the large-flowered clematis hybrids.
'Lasurstern' flowers twice a year: the first, usually somewhat fuller flush appears from May to June, followed by a second from July to September. At a height of around 300 cm, the variety is excellent for pergolas, trellises and other supports, which it grips with its leaf stalks. It thrives best in a bright to sunny position as long as the root area is kept cool and shaded; almost any aspect is possible.
Hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C), 'Lasurstern' reliably survives colder winters outdoors. As it belongs to pruning group 2, only light pruning is recommended: cut back to around 100 cm in June so the plant stays bushy and produces both flushes cleanly.
