Clematis 'Kunpuh' was raised in 1996 by the Japanese breeder H. Hayakawa and personally given by him in 1999 to the Dutch clematis expert Wim Snoeijer during a visit to Japan. Its 12 cm, semi-double flowers glow dark violet-blue with a paler central bar on the overlapping, pointed petals, set off by yellow stamens.
At around 200 cm, 'Kunpuh' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports on walls or fences, and also thrives in a large container. Its flowering season falls in early summer, from May to June, giving a bold splash of colour before many other climbers reach their main flush.
'Kunpuh' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm after its first flowering in June — this encourages compact growth and a strong flush the following year.
