Clematis 'Imperial' was raised in 1955 by Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from a cross between 'Lasurstern' and an unknown seedling selection. The 10-15 cm flowers appear in pink, with the first flowers of the season often semi-double; the (6-)8 tepals are elliptic to broadly lanceolate, pointed, with a slightly wavy margin, the filaments are white, and the anthers are pink-purple at first, turning yellowish later.
'Imperial' flowers once in June and again from July to August, reaching a height of around 300 cm. The variety suits trellises, climbing frames and obelisks in medium to large gardens and, thanks to its tolerance of any aspect, thrives in almost any position.
'Imperial' is hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
