Clematis 'Jackmanii Rubra' was introduced by the French nursery Houry et fils as early as before 1913. The flowers are a bold red and reach 8-12 cm across. The season's first flush often produces double or semi-double flowers with four to six slightly pointed sepals and a faint paler central bar, surrounded by creamy to pale-yellow stamens, while later growth produces single flowers.
From May to June and again from July to August, 'Jackmanii Rubra' bursts into bloom and grows vigorously to around 300 cm in height. This robust climber is ideal for trellises, espaliers, fences and obelisks, and its strong growth also makes a fine feature in larger gardens. It thrives in any aspect.
Hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C), 'Jackmanii Rubra' is one of the more robust clematis for the garden. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut it back to about 100 cm in June. Like other members of the Jackmanii group, it is known in trade under several names, including 'Rubra' and C. × jackmanii 'Rubra'.
