This old shrub rose, with its very pleasant, strong fragrance, has many names. 'Des Peintres' stems from the fact that in the 18th century it was a favourite subject for Dutch painters; this very old old rose has nothing in common with the French painter roses.

Rosa Centifolia 'Major' flowers once, very abundantly, in early summer; the light pink, ball-shaped blooms it shows in small clusters have numerous petals. Because of its unclear origin in the year 1597, it is also not entirely certain whether it should be classed among the Gallica roses or the Rosa Centifolia. The broadly spreading rose shrub with light green foliage needs space (ideally a rose garden), but in return is hardy and low-maintenance.
