Clematis 'Ibi' was bred in 1989 by the Japanese couple Kozo and Mikiko Sugimoto; the cultivar name is taken from a Japanese river. Its flowers open in radiant white, reach 10–12 cm across and carry striking reddish-purple stamens that create a lovely contrast against the pale petals.
At around 200 cm, 'Ibi' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports, and also thrives in containers on a patio or balcony. It flowers twice a year: first from May to June, then, after a short pause, a second, equally generous flush from July to August.
'Ibi' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to the easy-care pruning group 2. For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June.
