Clematis 'Jan Pawel II' was bred before 1981 by Brother Stefan Franczak in Poland. It is named after Pope John Paul II. In 1982 Jim Fisk brought the variety to Great Britain, where it is usually sold under the English name 'John Paul II'. The 10–15 cm single flowers appear in cream-white to pale pink with a pink bar that deepens as the bloom matures. Six petals and deep red anthers give them definition.
'Jan Pawel II' flowers from May to June and again from July to August. At around 300 cm, it clothes trellises, fences and pergolas. It is happiest in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil, and accepts chalk, clay, loam and sand alike.
'Jan Pawel II' is hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
