Clematis 'Super Night' was bred in 2007 by the Dutch nursery Jan van Zoest and introduced to the market in 2018 under the breeder's code 'Zo11112'. The variety belongs to the Viticella group of hybrids and produces medium-sized flowers 6 to 8 cm across: deep violet-purple with lighter mottling that gives way to a darker central bar as the season progresses; the filaments appear whitish to pale violet, the anthers pale violet.
'Super Night' flowers profusely from June to September on the current year's growth and reaches a height of around 300 cm. This moderate height makes the variety versatile: on trellises, climbing frames and obelisks as well as in a large container on a patio or balcony. It tolerates both sunny and partially shaded positions in any aspect – the only requirement is that the root area stays cool and shaded, for example with low planting or a layer of mulch.
With hardiness zone 6 (down to around -23 °C), 'Super Night' reliably survives harsh winters too. As it belongs to pruning group 3, it is cut back hard to about 25 cm above the ground in March – this encourages bushy growth and ensures a particularly abundant display of flowers the following summer.
