Clematis 'Hoshi-no-flamenco' comes from the Japanese breeder Minoru Hoshino and was raised around 1990 from a cross of 'Manshuu ki' with the texensis cultivar 'Gravetye Beauty' – its name means “Flamenco of the star” in Japanese. The flowers are 10–15 cm across, bright red with a purplish tinge and velvety: wide, elliptic sepals overlap and frame the bright yellow stamens at the centre of the bloom.
At around 200 cm, 'Hoshi-no-flamenco' climbs by its leaf stalks up trellises, supports and wall grids, and also does well in a large container on a balcony or patio. The first flush appears in May and June, with a second flush from July to August. Choose a bright but not fully sun-exposed spot with fertile, moist, well-drained soil; the base of the plant should be shaded, and the root ball may sit 5–10 cm deeper than before when planting.
'Hoshi-no-flamenco' is hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C); a layer of mulch gives the root zone extra protection in winter. Since the flowers form on the previous year's wood, remove only dead shoots in spring. For a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June, after the first flowering.
