Clematis 'Alice Fisk' is a classic among the large-flowered hybrids: English breeder Jim Fisk crossed 'Lasurstern' with 'Mrs Cholmondeley' in 1964 and named the variety after his mother. Its 10–15 cm star-shaped flowers glow in a delicate wisteria blue – six to eight pointed sepals with finely waved edges frame the purple stamens.
The first, abundant flush appears in June on last year's wood, followed by a second flush on the new shoots from July to September. At around 200 cm, 'Alice Fisk' stays pleasantly compact and is well suited to trellises, obelisks and smaller gardens. As the pale blue fades quickly in full sun, this variety looks its best in a semi-shaded spot.
'Alice Fisk' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 75 cm after the first flowering in June. It takes its time in the first year or two – then it flowers all the more freely.
